Sambucus racemosa

Red Elderberry: CA native deciduous shrub grows quickly to 10-20' tall and wide. Dense clusters of cream flowers appear in early summer and mature into hanging clusters of bright red berries in late summer and fall. Fruits are attractive to birds. Edible culinary or herbal use (berries must be cooked). Low to medium water. Hummingbird and pollinator favorite. Full sun to part shade. Seacoast, wind, clay, sand, heat and drought tolerant once established. Deer, gopher, and fire resistant.
