Frangula (Rhamnus) californica 'Leatherleaf'

Leatherleaf Coffeeberry: Evergreen CA native shrub that is more compact than the species form but can still grow to a large mound over 5' tall. Reddish stems. Leaves are a darker green than other cultivars and have margins rolled under. Fragrant, greenish-yellow flowers in spring followed by dark red, almost black, berries. Attracts birds, hummingbirds, butterflies, pollinators, and wildlife. Full sun to part shade. Low to medium water. Seacoast, wind, clay, sand, heat, and drought tolerant once established. Deer, gopher, rabbit, and fire resistant.
