Brassica oleracea v. acephala (Kale 'Richmond's Pride')
Purple Tree Collard, Perpetual Kale: Nutritious, evergreen, leafy vegetable with a tree-like stalk grows to 8' tall x 3' wide and lives up to 20 years in mild climates. Year-round edible leaves are like a blend of Kale, Collards, and Cabbage and taste best in late fall and winter. Sweeter and tastier than regular collards. Harvest the young, palm-sized leaves from the bottom of the stalk for raw salads, use the older leaves for cooked dishes. Only harvest a third of the foliage to keep the plant healthy, and prune it back occassionally. Yellow flowers attract hummingbirds and pollinators, leaves may attract birds. Good for containers. Grows indoors Full sun to part sun. Medium water. Prefers rich soil. Seacoast, wind, heat, clay, sand and drought tolerant once established.
