Hierochloe (Anthoxanthum) occidentalis

Vanilla Grass, Sweetgrass: Northern CA and US evergreen bunchgrass native to coniferous forests. 12-24" tall and wide with brown paniclles that rise above the foliage in spring- summer. Wide, bright green blades have a sweet vanilla fragrance when dried. Used in herbal medicine and in the production of distilled beverages. Larval host for the Western branded skipper butterfly. Attracts hummingbirds. Low to medium water. Part shade to shade. Seacoast, wind, clay and drought tolerant once established, though looks best with regular water. Deer and rabbit.resistant.
