Frangula (Rhamnus) californica ssp. tomentella

Serpentine Coffeberry: Evergreen CA native shrub 6-10' tall and wide. Has blue-grey leaves with silver undersides and grey, fuzzy stems. Clusters of small, fragrant, cream-colored flowers in late winter through spring followed by dark red, almost black, berries that are prized by birds. Also attracts hummingbirds, butterflies, pollinators, and wildlife. Full sun to part shade. Low to medium water. Seacoast, wind, clay, sand, heat, and drought tolerant once established. Deer, gopher, rabbit, and fire resistant.
