Eriogonum arborescens

Santa Cruz Island Buckwheat: Fast growing evergreen CA native 3' tall x 4' wide. Native to the Channel Islands. Compact, mounding sub-shrub with narrow hairy green leaves and a trunk and stems that have red ribbony bark. Flat heads of creamy white to pinkish flowers rise above the foliage in summer, then become cinnamon brown colored in fall as they age. Flowers, leaves and seeds attract birds, butterflies, and pollinators. Good for cut flowers. Full sun. Low water. Seacoast, wind, heat, sand, clay, and drought tolerant once established. Deer, gopher, and fire resistant.
