Diospyros whyteana

Black-bark, Bladdernut: Compact, evergreen and durable shrub or small tree 9-16' tall. Shiny, green, 1 1/2" long leathery leaves with undulating margins. Dark grey bark and reddish brown stems. New growth is bright green. Small lightly fragrant bell shaped dioecious white flowers (our plants are female). Small, red-to-scarlet berries that turn reddish-brown when ripe, are enclosed by an inflated, bladder-like, reddish-brown capsule that remains on the tree after the fruit has fallen. Great in containers. Full sun to part shade. Low water. Seacoast, wind , sand, heat, and drought tolerant once established. Deer and rabbit resistant.
