Crataegus phaenopyrum

Washington Hawthorn, Thornapple: Deciduous tree native to the Southeastern US grows 30' tall and wide with a rounded crown, spiny branches with thorns that are 1-3" long, and toothed leaves that turn orange and red in fall. Fragrant white flowers are followed by small, edible red fruit. Full sun to part shade. Medium water. Good in flower arrangements. Attracts hummingbirds, birds, bees and pollinators. Seacoast, wind, heat, sand, clay, and drought tolerant once established. Deer and fire resistant.
