Cercis occidentalis

Western Redbud: CA native multi-trunked shrub or small tree 6-20' tall and wide. Masses of rose-purple blossoms in early spring followed by conspicuous long seed pods that start out lime green and age to purple-brown. Round heart-shaped leaves emerge apple green then become bluish-green. In colder areas, the leaves have fall color of yellow or red. Smooth silvery-gray stems and branches. Full sun to part shade. Drought tolerant once established. Nectar and pollen source for bees. Attracts hummingbirds.
